Acceptability by psychiatrists of a web-based mental health tracker designed for the assessment of emerging psychiatric problems

In the context of the recent advances in electronic and mobile health, diagnostic assessment and patient monitoring have been supported by the emergence of innovative data collection tools. The Internet and mobile smartphone technologies offer new opportunities and enable the promotion of new approaches in mental health assessment and management. We assessed the acceptability of psychiatrists regarding the use of a web-based application developed to collect medical data during appointments through either a computer or smartphone device. 21 practitioners accepted to participate. Most of the practitioners regularly used new technologies, however, only 50% of the practitioners actually felt comfortable using computers. 86% (n=18) of the doctors would recommend the tool to their colleagues and 67% said that daily use of the tool would be interesting. However, several psychiatrists (19%) point out the necessity of improving the ergonomics of the tool. Some of them report concerns about the storage of medical data through the tool and most of them (52%) seem to be uncomfortable with this notion. In this study, we describe the first step of the development of a web application. This online tool offers the possibility of easily assessing patients and collecting medical data. The high acceptability of this application is a strong argument to use it in routine clinical work. This could help to standardize assessment and build a strong database. Combined with robust data mining analytic techniques, it will allow exploration of risk factors, patterns of evolution, identification of different subgroups and will help decision making.
